BEAVER: Solutions Through Systems Engineering
Retail pharmacy distribution
Shoppers Drug Mart

For three huge warehouse distribution centres (in Moncton, Calgary, and Toronto) with a combined area of nearly 1 million square feet, Canada's largest pharmacy chain turned to Beaver.

Each facility contains 3-level pick modules, replenishment pallet racking to serve the pick modules, and standard APR racking for full-case orders.

The 3-level pick modules, with catwalks at 9' and 18', are the engineering heart of the system. Each module is mirrored along a vertical axis, with full pallets brought in from the replenishment racking on the outside.

Pallets are broken down and product is loaded into standard totes in a unique carton flow system, five totes wide per bay and four levels high. The tracks are so strong that rack beam supports on 49" centres are more than adequate.

Flanged wheels, which self-centre each carton as it flows through the rack, make lane dividers things of the past. What's more, the time-consuming process of changing lane widths as with changing vendor cartons is now quick and easy: "Comb" connector strips allow the horizontal position of tracks to be changed in seconds. The entire system is engineered with safety in mind, with anti-impact clips and brake strips.
